Food stalls ‘Yatai’s, in Fukuoka city are known as one of the best gourmet street all around the country and even internationally. They are renowned for their gourmet tastes as well as their ease of mobility. Locals and tourists can enjoy the seller’s unique foods as well as to enjoy short conversations with the other patrons. Universal City • Fukuoka Design Workshop 2016 proposes to design more enjoyable and efficient stalls to be used in collaboration with the stall owners and customers.
Team A: Umbrella Yatai The concept is that just like a transparent umbrella, a single person is able to open the Yatai by himself. Usually, it is a great burden for the Yatai owners to setup, especially if the Yatai roof is high and the person who is setting it up has a short stature or is an elder. In this case, the proposal included a hook for the floor to secure the Yatai in place, power to push the rear cart and a roof that automatically opens up. Furthermore, the Yatai’s attendance is visible from the outside, allowing for browsing visitors or people wishng to eat at a Yatai. This means that they can see from the outside whether or not it is the type of food they wish to eat and also whether or not it would be troublesome trying to enter.
Team B: Be laid-back at Yatai The concept is to offer customers a high quality and comfortable personal Yatai experience, which no one has ever experienced before. A general problem with Yatai stalls for the owners is that it takes a great deal of and effort to construct. On the customers’ point of view, time limit, comfort, hygiene and product quality is of great importance. For the sake of these, chairs will be replaced by tatami mats, providing enjoyable time. The tatami model can have the mats removed and it supports accessibility for wheelchairs. There is also space below the module for storage. Until now, this kind of design that takes careful consideration on the operation of the Yatai has never been attempted. Hopefully it will allow for the new design to grow the popularity of Fukuoka Yatais.
Team C: Trip Yatai Fukuoka The concept is to set Yatai as an entrance and exit of Fukuoka tourist information center. Like other Yatai it stands as an icon of Fukuoka City. However the difference is that whilst being charming and fun people can learn about sightseeing information. At the Yatai Landlords and Landladies are present to confer information in a fun and Yatai-like atmosphere. The sorts of information provided to patrons is information that cannot be found on the internet. In the shop, you can taste the local products of Fukuoka such as Yame tea, Umega branch cake and so on. Also, there is ample space to allow access for wheelchairs. Care and attention of the design allows all people, including children, of all heights and sizes to enjoy it. Our proposal is to create a business Yatai model that anyone can use easily.
