2012 FUKUOKA 48-hour Design Challenge
In order to broadcast the thinking of “Friendly People, Friendly City” of UNIVERSAL FUKUOKA CITY to the citizens and to deepen the citizens’ understanding of UD, design workshop was organized from October 5th to October 7th. The theme is “Make the City of Hakata into Infohub”.
By using the advanced method of “Inclusive Design” which means the users and designers think about the solution of problems together, we challenged to achieve the Fukuoka-based design of “Friendly People, Friendly City”. The director of this program is Ms. Julia Cassim who is the profession of universal design that has been very active all over the world.
A Team: Health
Hakata “Kiten” Project
The main problem is how to explain and design the service that provide information for various people to use through the problems of Hakata Station sensed by our design partner, the visually impaired person and the foreigners.
Problems of Hakata Station: ①It is hard to know where I am or where are the attraction spots②Do not know what to do when occasion demands, these two points.
From the problems, it is discovered that the healthy way of the city (Health) means migratory, active communication is born easily, which forms a situation where people and information can circulate without delay. So we discussed to symbolize the information spots and show the support system (personal and informational), and to build the mechanism for travelers to be able to communicate and to create network of the information collection and transmission mechanism
B Team: Life
Sharing the life knowledge THE RING
How will the station’s function as the information source change if the visitors of Hakata Station can collect the live information they have and share it? We design the information system for consumers to be able to “Stock, Browse, Search” the information that they receive by themselves directly, which is with freshness. By visualizing and creating the flow of information, it is possible to provide the chance to come across with information for the people who thought “I do not know what I want to know in the first hand, and I do not know how to find information”. People always catch the information that flow beside them and get the information released by others. The useful information will then become larger and continue flowing. “the Ring” is the information hub that links the surrounding information in circle centering in Hakata Station, that let the information flow and come back and forth.
info-rest The transition space where you can move slowly and safely
Many people walk fast in Hakata Station. Within all this crowd, there are foreigners standing in front of the information board and looking for guidance, and there are handicapped people who move in their own pace. Now these people are being treated as outsiders. The keyword to solve this problem is the relationship between “necessary information” and “movement speed”. That is to say to provide less information for the quick users and for the slow users more information is needed. This leads to the answer of realization of “slow transition” by setting the “forest of information”. This is a plan to provided for the slow users while providing the quick users with calmness.
D Team: Disaster prevention
Hakata shield: making the Hakata City into a shelter
We design the thinking of “places to hide when disaster happens”.
The Hakata City will become the “Hakata Shield” for emergency. Hakata Station is equipped with place, information and people needed for emergency. We propose the plan to maximize the utilization of all of these elements.
“Shield Are” is an icon to indicate safety, to let everyone understand in daily life that Hakata Station is safe. ”Kokoniiru Cards” is a tool to confirm and transmits the information that “I am here”. By using the unified format and the pillars in the station, the survival information can be transmitted efficiently.
”Gorenger Zekken” is the reliable shield person that saves people from panic and cooperate with everyone. It is to make it easily recognizable who to turn to and what they can do when there is emergency.
